Estimate your job
Typical Indianapolis-area range
$4,000 to $15,000+
Larger, multi-story, tile-heavy or copper jobs run higher.
What moves the price
- Pushes toward the high endEach finished floor means more walls and ceilings to open and close. A finished two-story house with plaster walls pushes toward the high end.
- Basement or crawlspaceAn unfinished basement ceiling leaves the main lines exposed, which keeps the first-floor runs simpler.
- Pushes toward the high endEvery sink, toilet, tub, shower, hose bibb and appliance is a connection to make and test. More bathrooms push toward the high end.
- Pushes toward the high endPlaster or drywall opened at fittings and turns, and who closes the openings. Whether patching is included is a line in the quote.
Permit: City of Indianapolis Department of Business and Neighborhood Services (DBNS)
A repipe of an existing home takes a plumbing permit, charged by the home's area. The rough-in is inspected before the walls close.
| Plumbing permit, existing home$153 up to 1,000 sq ft plus $23 per extra 500 sq ft |
|---|
- A failed inspection adds a $175 reinspection fee.
- Replacing piping in kind, no more than 20% of the piping in the building, does not need a permit.
City of Indianapolis permit fees
Material: PEX or copper
Both are used for water supply piping. PEX usually means fewer openings and a lower price; copper costs more for the same house. The range here covers either.
Not in the range
- Patching and painting, unless the quote lists it
- A new water heater or new fixtures
- Sewer and drain lines
- The water service line from the curb, a separate job under Citizens Energy Group's service line standards
These are budgeting figures, not a quote. Permit lines are the agencies' published fees; the price for your house comes after a look at the piping.
How the estimate works
Where the numbers come from
The ranges are typical Indianapolis-area budgeting ranges, not the contractors' rates and not a quote. No answer stretches them: there are no multipliers and no size scaling, and the top of the whole-house range stays open.
The permit lines are the agencies' own fees: the City of Indianapolis permit fee schedule ($153 up to 1,000 sq ft plus $23 per extra 500 sq ft for an existing home) and the City of Greenwood residential permit application ($75). Home size is used only for the Indianapolis permit line.
What you get for each job
| Your answers | The estimator shows |
|---|---|
| Whole-house repipe of a single-family house | $4,000 to $15,000+, a typical Indianapolis-area range, the same for every pipe material. |
| Partial repipe, or a double, apartment, condo or commercial building | No range: the drivers for that building, and a price after a look at it. |
| Pipe repair | About $150 to $650 when the pipe is exposed; about $300 to $1,200 when a wall or ceiling is opened and patched. |
| Finding and fixing one hidden leak | About $350 to $1,200, with a small access opening and a basic patch. |
| Burst pipe repair | About $400 to $1,500 for the pipe itself; water damage cleanup is separate. |
